Community Connections: Ladera Ranch Library Summer Nature Programs

The month of July marks the 8th summer of nature programs with The Nature Reserve and the OC Public Library in Ladera Ranch. This collaboration and partnership bring our programming into one of the most important spaces in our community – the library. The focus on serving and helping others learn about the world and their local community is something we both share. Libraries are vital community resources that have evolved beyond books and children’s story time hour. They provide access to internet and meeting spaces for a variety of groups and activities that strengthen ties to the community they serve. As the summer heats up, many come in to enjoy a place where everyone is welcome. This partnership gives The Nature Reserve an opportunity to bring attention to the wildlife and history of the local community.

Over the three-week series this July, over 500 adults and children walked, biked, and rode to the library to participate in our summer nature programs. During Wonderful Wildlife! participants learned about our native wildlife and met some of The Nature Reserve’s animal ambassadors like our desert tortoise and rosy boa snake. The following week during I Dig Rocks and Fossils!, the focus was on the geology and paleontology of California. Ancient mysteries were uncovered as we explored fossils and learned how important rocks are to our local wildlife. The last week connected participants with one of summer's favorite features – insects! During Inspect an Insect! attendees explored the largest animal group on the planet and how important they are to both wildlife and humans.

Libraries, as well as our wildlands, are places where we can all feel a sense of belonging and learning. We hope we can connect with you soon!
